Upper Elementary

4th grade - 6th grade

The Upper Elementary classroom uses a whole-child approach to education that addresses academic, social, emotional, and moral development while nurturing curiosity, self-motivation, and a sense of responsibility.

Students start by using concrete materials to understand abstract concepts before moving into the abstract. As other Montessori grade levels, the students have a choice in their work, balanced by clear expectations and accountability. Their independence is built through time management and community care.

All subjects are connected through the “Great Lessons”, Upper Elementary has a focus on project-based work in which students research, create presentations, and engage in hands-on experiments. They take what they have learned out into the world during Forest School days, which allows for nature observation, field studies, and real-world problem solving. Students also have an opportunity to practice their practical life skills through planning events, maintaining the classroom, and participating in their greater communities. â€‹

About the Teachers

Maddy Newman, a Fort Wayne , Indiana native, brings her passion for education and a love for working with children to the Alyssum Montessori community.  She holds a Bachelor's degree in Family Consumer Sciences from Ball State University and is pursuing a Master's in Montessori Education.  Her teaching journey began in 2021 at a childcare center, where her interest in education blossomed, leading her to explore various teaching philosophies.  Captivated by the Montessori approach, Maddy joined Alyssum Montessori as an assistant teacher in 2023.  She is thrilled to step into her role, guiding the Upper Elementary classroom and fostering a nurturing and engaging learning environment. In her free time, Maddy enjoys crafting, reading, visiting local coffee shops, and spending quality moments with her friends and family.

Molly has been part of the Alyssum Montessori community since 2023, beginning in the Primary program. She is now assisting with Upper Elementary students. She loves getting to grow and learn alongside this age group. She truly enjoys the curiosity and creativity they bring each day! Art is a huge passion of hers, and she loves having the opportunity to share that passion by teaching art to Upper Elementary students.

As both a parent and guide, She feels deeply connected to the Alyssum Montessori community. She supports the learning environment by preparing materials, observing and guiding children's activities and maintaining a well-organized and peaceful classroom,  ensuring each child's learning pace and style is respected.
